Jan Hur

“No self-taught artist, she attended The Rochester Museum Art School, Buffalo State Teacher’s College and the Albright Art School. Her sure sense of composition and of linear decoration bespeaks a thorough grounding in design principles. Yet her distinctive kind of whimsy wasn’t learned. It comes naturally. Her effervescent personality had to have an outlet. She chose art.” – The Christian Science Monitor

Whimsical original one-of-a-kind paintings in acrylic plus a very limited number of encaustic paintings from the artist’s private collections

Jan is an 86-year-old artist who has been painting all her life. She has won many juried awards and top popular vote awards and has had three one-woman exhibits in various galleries. She also has been in invitational and exhibits in a verity of locations including the deCordova Art Museum Two Day Art Fair, deCordova Show House Exhibits, and Art Festivals throughout New England. She received the Eli Goldstone Award at the Cambridge Art Association Annual Show and a Purchase Prize in the Portland, Maine Art Festival Winner’s Circle.

According to The Christian Science Monitor, “Her paintings show the most exuberant use of color.” Each printing takes four to five weeks to complete – working six or seven hours a day, usually six days a week. Jan’s subject matter is broad – drawn from nature and the world around her. Recently she has focused on musicians, and in many of these is interpreting the sound of the music inti the color and movement of the sound in the background. As a grandmother, Jan has been incorporating her grandchildren into many of her paintings. She enjoys their pleasure in seeing themselves as she sees them – with much love and humor.

After forty years of isolating herself from selling or exhibiting her art (which allowed her to concentrate on subjects of personal interest), Jan was invited by Stewart Clifford to show her art at the Stewart Clifford Gallery in Provincetown. Her work will be shown exclusively there throughout the 2017 season.
